Reconnecting With Who You Are Beyond Illness
Why identity can play a role in recovery and resilience.
When we think about recovery or feeling better, we often think about appearance and severity of symptoms.
How much energy do I have today?
Can I do a little more or will I be like this forever?
What triggered that setback?
Those questions matter.
But there may be another part of recovery that deserves our attention as well: our identity.
Long COVID, other health challenges and even chronic stress can affect much more than our physical function. They can change our routines, our confidence, and even how we see ourselves.
This week, we explore why reconnecting with what matters can be an important part of recovery and resilience. We also look at the value of lived experience – through communities, conversations, books, and podcasts – and how these stories can help us feel understood and inspire new possibilities.
We're also excited to share a remarkable new book by Matt Fitzgerald, Dying to Run: An Athlete's Quest for One More Finish, which will be released on September 8 -this coming Tuesday. We were grateful to play a part in Matt's journey, and we're honored that he shares his experience with ThriveNinety in the book to help provide education and hope to people impacted by similar chronic conditions.
Whether you're living with Long COVID, recovering from another health challenge, or simply trying to manage stress and build your resilience, we hope this week's article offers encouragement and a fresh perspective.
