Recovery, resilience, and performance are connected
From 2002 to 2026, a growing body of research has explored how the nervous and immune systems work together to support adaptation, recovery, and resilience.
At ThriveNinety, we often talk about health, recovery, resilience, and performance as interconnected rather than separate goals.
A growing body of research supports this whole-system perspective.
In our latest blog, we look at a scientific story that spans more than two decades, from Kevin
Tracey's influential 2002 paper, The Inflammatory Reflex, through to new research published in 2026.
While the research has become increasingly sophisticated, the central idea remains surprisingly simple: the nervous system, immune system, and many other body systems are in constant communication. Understanding those connections may be important for understanding how we recover, adapt, build resilience, and sustain performance over time.
It's a fascinating example of how scientific ideas evolve and a reminder that some of the concepts receiving attention today have deep roots in decades of research.

PS: One of our favorite takeaways from this research is that many of the ideas receiving attention today around nervous system regulation, resilience, and brain-body health are far from new. Scientists have been exploring these connections for decades. Sometimes the science arrives long before it becomes part of mainstream conversation.
