You Can Heal Wherever You Are
Tuberculosis and Lessons for Long COVID Recovery (written 05/19/2024)
Searching for solutions to manage Long Covid symptoms can lead to people trying a number of different activities, including rest, swimming in cold water or walking in natural spaces. While gentle outdoor pursuits have a grounding in evidence and have helped people manage their symptoms, a large number of people impacted by Long COVID may not have easy access to these types of outlets due to geography or the severity of their symptoms.
Katie and I are fortunate to have lakes and trails close by. We live in an area where fresh air treatments for tuberculosis were common before medication became available. These days, antibiotics are used to treat tuberculosis. At the moment, people have commented that “fresh air” cures feel like the best that can be done for people living with Long COVID.
Like tuberculosis in the early part of the 20th century, the important questions to ask when considering how to support people with Long COVID are: (i) How do you develop solutions that offer a more systematic path to improvement; and (ii) How do you develop solutions that are accessible, especially for people who have difficulty leaving their homes?
In our latest blog post, Tuberculosis and Lessons for Long COVID Recovery, Katie writes about the connections between tuberculosis treatment approaches and those for Long COVID. She considers what we can learn from history to help tackle a very new health crisis.
Warmly,
Katie & Andrea
