Finding Your Holiday Pace
How to Make It Through the Season with Energy (and Joy) to Spare (written 11/09/2025)
Halloween is behind us, and Thanksgiving - along with the rest of the holiday season - is fast approaching. For many, this is a time of celebration, but if you’re living with an infection-induced chronic condition, it can also bring new challenges.
In the past, your biggest worry might have been getting the food just right. Now, your focus might look more like this:
Will my symptoms let me spend time with family and friends?
Will I have enough energy to make it through the day?
How many days will I need to rest beforehand just to be able to attend?
Energy levels can be unpredictable, and that’s where Pacing becomes your best ally.
Think of pacing as your personal energy equation:
Available Energy – Energy for Priorities = Buffer.
The bigger your buffer, the more capacity you have for the unexpected - and for enjoyment.
Start by listing what gives you energy (people, activities, quiet moments) and what drains it.
Then prioritize the things that truly matter - the gatherings, conversations, or simple joys that lift you up - and de-prioritize what doesn’t need to happen.
Remember, pacing isn’t just about subtraction. You can add energy too.
Use your tools - gentle movement, breathing practices, nourishing food, or even a few minutes doing something you love - to replenish your system. These moments boost dopamine and other recovery-supporting signals that help you feel more balanced.
Since holiday events often revolve around food, keep your anti-inflammatory principles in mind (see Recovery Kitchen Essentials for guidance). But be kind to yourself - our 80/20 rule still applies. What you do 80% of the time makes the biggest difference, so enjoy the season without guilt.
This month, let pacing guide your plans so you can move through the holidays with more ease, energy, and maybe even a little extra joy.
Warmly,
Katie & Andrera
