Embracing Pacing for Energy Management
Pacing is a whole strategy that eliminates things and activities that unnecessarily take energy. (written 07/06/2025)
What’s Pacing
Pacing, the first element in the PEDAL™ approach, is about much more than just resting. It’s a whole strategy that eliminates things and activities that unnecessarily take energy, and are in our control to cut back on or cut out. This can include foods, environmental factors, toxin exposure, and more. The natural question is, “Where do I start?” While guiding people through steps to find individual strategies in the Pacing Essentials program, we want to share a practical tip you can build into your pacing strategy today.
Embracing Pacing for Energy Management
Again, by implementing pacing strategies—prioritising activity that gives energy and at the same time being mindful of intensity levels and not pushing through limits — you may notice a reduction in symptom flare-ups and be able to do things you love while avoiding PEM. What is better, is that these mindful adjustments can lead to substantial improvements over time as your system gains comfort with doing activities again - re-learning that it is “safe” to do.
Your Mini Challenge for Impact: The 3 Tools Approach
We mention the 3 tools often, because we know the impact they can have and would like to support you to build a daily recovery routine that includes them. This week, we invite you to try the "3 tools" as your daily energy giving tasks (remember, they take less than 5 minutes and are easy for people with energy limitations):
-
Prioritize: Which of the three tools do you feel the most impact from? Start with that one.
-
Plan: Think about what time of day they are easiest to work into your schedule and build a habit. When people ask us for advice, we always recommend doing them first thing in the morning - it’s easier to remember and fit into the day. You are sure to do them, and it sets up your day.
-
Use: Whenever you need a boost or would like to feel sharper throughout your day, support yourself and your nervous system by using one of the three tools.
Implementing the tools can help conserve energy and enhance your daily functioning.
Remember, small, consistent actions can lead to significant positive changes over time. You're not alone on this journey, and every step forward is a win.
Warmly,
Katie & Andrea
PS. Pacing helps you to create space for your system to recover, while supporting your body and brain with tools that create capacity for you to do more and have real impact on symptoms.
